On Sunday afternoon, Orlando collected two points with a 3-1 win over Jacksonville. After suffering their third loss in a row to the Solar Bears on Sunday, the Icemen will be glad to not have to see their in-state rival again in the 2017-18 season, presented by Community First Credit Union, until March 29th.
For the first time during this busy weekend, both teams were able to score in the first period. Alex Gudbranson got the scoring started for the Solar Bears with a slapshot through traffic from the point at 15:00 into the opening frame. However, the Icemen would respond just a few minutes later right after an Orlando penalty expired. Defenseman Christopher Dienes, a recent selection to the 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic, found Tyson Fawcett in the slot for the redirect and the game was tied. It was a significant goal for Fawcett as he celebrated his 100th career ECHL point.
In a second period riddled with penalties, the only scoring came from Orlando while on the penalty kill. Kale Kerbashian stole a pass from Scott Savage at center ice and skated in all alone against Colton Phinney to give the Solar Bears the 2-1 lead. Jacksonville would be unable to answer, and the Solar Bears took a one-goal lead into the third period for the second straight game.
Orlando was able to limit Jacksonville to only seven shots in the third period and the Solar Bears cashed in on an empty net goal to win the game, 3-1.
The Icemen return home to face the Greenville Swamp Rabbits on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Click here to secure your tickets for another Wine and Dine Wednesday game.
