GREENVILLE, SC – Garet Hunt and Kris Newbury each finished with a goal and an assist to help lead the Jacksonville Icemen to a 2-1 victory over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at the Bons Secours Wellness Arena Sunday afternoon. The Icemen (33-25-2-2, 70 pts) remain in third place in the South Division.
Jacksonville scored first while killing off its first penalty of the game. Dajon Mingo skated the puck out of his own end to the Greenville zone. Mingo delivered a backhanded pass to Garet Hunt whose shot was blocked by a defender in front. However, the rebound bounced to Kris Newbury at the right wing circle. Newbury wristed the puck into the net behind goaltender Garrett Bartus for the tally.
Newbury set up the second Jacksonville goal hallway through the second period. Newbury delivered a no-look, backhanded pass from the back dasher to an abandoned left circle. Hunt immediately collected the puck and snapped a shot high past the glove of Bartus and into the top corner of the net to extend the Icemen lead to 2-0.
Six minutes into the third, Greenville got on the board on a tally by Eric Robichaud. Robichaud skated to a loose puck in the slot and flexed a shot that clipped pas Ken Appleby to pull the Swamp Rabbits within one.
Greenville would challenge for the remainder of the third period, but Appleby closed the door on the Swamp Rabbits to help secure the 2-1 victory. Appleby earned the win stopping 25 of 26 shots faced in the contest
