JACKSONVILLE, FL – Samuel Asselin scored twice and added two assists to guide the Atlanta Gladiators to a 4-1 victory over the Jacksonville Icemen Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Arena.
Atlanta used its first power play to assume a 1-0 lead in the contest. A shot from the point angled off the back dasher and bounced directly to side of the Jacksonville net. Nick Bligh fielded the puck and shoved it into the net behind goaltender Jeremey Helvig for the tally.
Later in the period, Samuel Asselin delivered a shot into traffic from the slot that was initially blocked. However, the puck hopped back to Asselin’s stick and he wristed a second shot into the net to extend the Atlanta lead to 2-0.
Jacksonville countered at 18:40 of the opening frame. Maxime Fortier raced from his own blue line into the offensive zone. From the left wing, Fortier began to angle toward the top of the crease and swung the puck around an outstretched Martin Ouellette for the goal to put the score at 2-1 at the end of the first period.
Atlanta’s Joel Messner tacked on a third Atlanta goal early in the second period to expand his team’s lead further. Later in the period, the Icemen scored an apparent goal with seconds remaining in the middle stanza. Following a video review, it was determined that the puck did not go into the net and the score remained 3-1 Atlanta after two periods.
Early in the third period, the Gladiators sealed the game with a fourth tally when Asselin tipped and redirected a shot from the point into to the net for a tally to put the score at the eventual final 4-1.
