Icemen Earn Four Points This Week Against Division Rivals

For the second straight game in the 2017-18 season presented by Community First Credit Union, the Icemen and Admirals would need more than 60 minutes. Both teams were 11.2 seconds away from another shootout when Darik Angeli scored to give Norfolk its second win against Jacksonville.

The Icemen have been known for their quick starts, and they didn't disappoint on Saturday night. At 1:06 into the first period, Elgin Pearce stole the puck in the left circle and fired a wrist shot past Jamie Murray to give Jacksonville the one-goal lead. One minute later, captain Garet Hunt received a beautiful pass from Jimmy Lodge and fired home the game's second goal. Just after four minutes in the first period, the captain would strike again, beating Murray on a breakaway for the 3-0 lead.

Over halfway through the first, the Admirals would get on the board when Thomas Frazee scored on the power play. With under two minutes remaining in the opening frame, Darik Angeli got one by Phinney on the man advantage to make the game 3-2. Elgin Pearce was quick to respond for Jacksonville, scoring just 33 seconds later to increase the lead to two. With 29 seconds remaining, Scott Savage scored from the left circle to give the Icemen a 5-2 lead after one period.

Jimmy Lodge carried the Icemen's momentum over to the second period with his fifth goal of the season. Despite being down four goals, the Admirals would not go away quietly. Patrick D'Amico pulled his team within three goals when he rang one off the post and in. Minutes later, Don Olivieri scored the Admirals' third power play goal of the game to make it a two-goal game.

Norfolk continued to dominate, scoring 17 seconds into the final frame when Michael Young beat Colton Phinney to make the game 6-5. Minutes away from their fifth victory of the season, the Icemen would give up their sixth goal when Max Cook notched his first of the season. Once again, the two teams would need overtime.

For the second time in the game, Darik Angeli would score, this time it was the game-winning goal with 11.2 seconds left. Norfolk takes two points and the Icemen skate away with one on Saturday.

The Icemen hit the road for a three-game road trip, starting Wednesday, Dec. 6 in Duluth against the Atlanta Gladiators. The next home game for the Icemen is on Wednesday, Dec. 13 when the Manchester Monarchs visit Jacksonville.
