GREENVILLE, SC – Matt Marcinew scored twice and added two assists to lead the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a 5-3 victory over the Jacksonville Icemen at the Bons Secours Wellness Arena Saturday evening.
Jacksonville grabbed the game’s first tally following a faceoff in the offensive zone. James Phelan won the draw to the point to Charles-David Beaudoin. Beaudoin delivered a shot from the point that was initially sopped by Greenville goaltender Ryan Bednard. However, forward Chase Lang grabbed the rebound and steered the puck into the net for the goal.
The Swamp Rabbits spent the remainder of the opening period peppering shots on Icemen netminder Griffen Outhouse. Despite facing a barrage of shots, Outhouse turned aside all 19 shots hurled at him in the opening period to preserve Jacksonville’s 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Outhouse went on to stop the first 28 shots faced in the game. However, Greenville got on the board in the second when Jacob Pritchard poked the puck into the net just before Outhouse could get the cover to even the game at 1-1.
Four minutes later, Greenville claimed the lead when leading scorer Liam Pecararo was left wide open on the back door and shoved the puck into the wide-open net. The goal gave the Swamp Rabbits a 2-1 lead at the second break.
The third period featured some fortuitous bounces and hops for the Rabbits. The first came on a routine dump-in into the Icemen end. The puck rolled around the boards and Outhouse abandoned his crease to play the puck behind the net. However, the puck had other ideas and took a skip off the back dasher and deflected to Matt Marcinew at the top of the crease. Marcinew immediately batted the puck into the open net to extend the Greenville lead to 3-1.
Icemen newcomer Brendan Warren pulled Jacksonville back within one when he hurled a short form the left-wing boards that stunned Bednard and clipped into the top corner of the net. The goal was the first for Warren who scores in his professional debut.
Moments later, the Rabbits were the recipients of another fortunate bounce when Marcinew snapped a shot from the slot that sailed high over the net. The puck ricocheted off the back glass and hit the numbers on the back of Outhouse’s jersey and banked into the net to put Greenville back out in front by two.
Greenville tacked on an empty-net goal later in the period that deflected off an Icemen skate to extend to a three-goal advantage, while Icemen defenseman Mitch Jones added another tally on a slap shot with one-minute to play However it would not be enough as the Swamp Rabbits skipped to a 5-3 victory.
Outhouse takes the setback despite making 40 saves, while Bednard earns the win allowing three goals on 25 shots.
